1997 Zenith Class 4 - El Primero Cal. 400 Movement - Limited to 630

With 2500 made and only 630 in this stunning sunburst Salmon dial here is a Zenith Class 4 from 1997 with the iconic El Primero movement. Zenith has always been a staple in watch history, building its own movements in-house since 1865 and earning a reputation for its high precision. In 1969 it released the El Primero, one of the world's first automatic chronographs and notable for its high-beat 36,000 vph movement that could measure time to a tenth of a second. Its most famous moment came when Rolex used a modified El Primero to power the Cosmograph Daytona (ref. 16520) from 1988 until 2000.

Diving into this Class 4, starting off with the Salmon dial - according to the catalogs, Zenith officially called it "Bronze" but its more of a sunburst Salmon dial. Dances all around and goes from light salmon to an actual bronze color depending on the light. Applied steel baton indexes, subsidiary registers for the running seconds, the 30-minute counter, and the 12-hour counter with the signature El Primero date window tucked in between 4 and 5 o clock.

Has a very distinct case shape, especially for a El Primero piece. It has this squared cushion case with gorgeous lines. Seamless stepped bezel with a sapphire crystal. My favorite part is the hinged lug system. The strap doesn't connect straight to the case. Instead, each set of lugs holds a small swiveling piece, and the strap attaches to that so it can pivot and bend to wrap around your wrist. Such a unique design.

Inside beats the heart of the whole thing: the in-house Caliber 400 El Primero movement, the legendary high-frequency automatic chronograph running at 36,000 vibrations per hour, able to measure short time intervals to one-tenth of a second! The same architecture that made the El Primero famous in 1969 and that powered the Rolex Daytona for over a decade. Holds time accurately and the chronograph function works and resets perfectly.
